Mechanical Bull is the sixth studio album by American rock band Kings of Leon, released in Ireland, Germany, Sweden and Australia on September 20, 2013, in the United Kingdom on September 23, 2013, and in North America on September 24, 2013 by RCA Records. In late 2013 the album received a nomination at the 56th Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album. Critical reception was generally positive.

John Bull first appears as a character in a series of political satires by John Arbuthnot (1667-1735). Arbuthnot was a Scottish scientist, doctor and political satirist. His series of John Bull pamphlets, ‘The History of John Bull’, introduced John Bull as the typical Englishman: an honest plain-dealing fellow, choleric, bold, and of a very inconstant temper (from Law is a Bottomless Pit). By 1762 James Gillray and other caricature engravers had incorporated John Bull into their work, and he appeared as a cartoon by Sir John Tenniel in Punch magazine. John Bull is still looked upon with affection by many English people. As Uncle Sam is the iconic representation of the United States, so John Bull is the personification of the character of the English: honest, generous, straightforward, with a zest for life and ready to stand up and fight for what he believes in. John Bull (1562/63–1628) was an English composer, musician, and organ builder. He was a renowned keyboard performer and most of his compositions were written for this medium. Bull's place of birth is shrouded in uncertainty. In 1573 he joined the choir at Hereford cathedral, and the next year joined the Children of the Chapel Royal in London, where he studied with John Blitheman and William Hunnis; in addition to singing he learnt to play the organ at this time.

The Lonely Bull (album). Because of this, critics have noted that when listened to on headphones, the stereo album sounds excessively "heavy" on one side. This led many later fans to prefer the mono version. The original stereo version of the album has since been reissued on the Shout! Factory music label. The mono version of the title track, "The Lonely Bull," can be found on the Herb Alpert compilation Definitive Hits.
