On the first viewing of the movie I remember grabbing the album as a track listing of who was up next. No joy, several acts are missing from the album, which threw me. The Alleycats and UB40 come to mind. The Alley Cats in particular are one of the acts that make the film a great archival item. Great album, even better film, if you have the time. URGH! a Music War was first a film and double LP soundtrack. It was released back in 1982, when I was first getting my feet wet in British and American post-punk music. The film itself is great, showcasing a variety of acts all under the loose umbrella of "New Wave" from the power-pop of the Police, the Go-Go's, and XTC, to the electro musings of Gary Numan, and the totally uncatagorizable, sadly missed and WAY ahead of his time Klaus Nomi.
In 1981, a year before release of the film, A&M Records released a double-album soundtrack. The selection of songs was almost the same as the film, but there were a few minor changes and several acts featured in the film did not make it to the album (Dead Kennedys, John Cooper Clarke, Chelsea, Surf Punks, Invisible Sex, Splodgenessabounds). Subsequent distribution. Urgh! A Music War was briefly released to theatres by Filmways Pictures, but acquired a cult following in the United States in the 1980s due to its frequent showings on the USA Network.
