Suddenly Last Summer" is a hit song by new wave band the Motels. It was the lead-off 45 from their RIAA Gold-certified fourth album Little Robbers. The single entered the Hot 100 at on September 3, 1983 and peaked at on November 19, 1983. Suddenly Last Summer Lyrics. It happened one summer It happened one time It happened forever For a short time A place for a moment An end to a dream Forever I loved you Forever it seemed. One summer never ends One summer never began It keeps me standing still It takes all my will And then suddenly Last summer. Sometimes I never leave But sometimes I would Sometimes I stay too long Sometimes I would Sometimes it frightens me Sometimes it would Sometimes I'm all alone And wish that I could

Suddenly Last Summer" ties with their previous hit, "Only The Lonely," for The Motels' highest-charting single. However, it is also their only hit, albeit on the Mainstream Rock chart. The Motels came out of the burgeoning Los Angeles punk scene and released their first album in 1979. They went through several member changes, and in 1987 they broke up when Martha Davis started her solo career. The Motels were one of the first American bands to have videos on MTV in its early startup days.

Suddenly Last Summer, a top 10 hit by the Motels off their 1983 album Little Robbers, was just such a song. This haunting lament for a loss of innocence was written by the group’s lead singer Martha Davis, who explained to American Songwriter that the composition of the song essentially spanned over a decade. I was just sitting in the backyard and it was a beautiful sunny day in Berkeley, Davis remembered. It was the end of summer. Suddenly Last Summer also benefitted from a fantastic performance, from Davis’ wistful vocal to Steven Godstein’s unforgettable descending keyboard part. A place for a moment/ An end to a dream/ Forever I loved you/ Forever it seemed, she sings in the first verse, a lovely evocation of the ephemerality of romance.
