Roy Harper's fourth album found him in an acoustic folkie mode more often than not, though as usual (for circa late-'60s Harper) there were detours into pretty rocky items on occasion. It's not much of either a progression or a slide from the lyrically convoluted, somewhat but not incredibly melodic path he had established with his prior work.

Roy Harper (born 12 June 1941) is an English folk rock singer, songwriter and guitarist who has been a professional musician since 1964. Harper has released 32 albums (including 10 live albums) across his 50-year career . The album included the track "Another Day", a song destined to be performed live by Harper for many years to come, and covered by several other artists including Elizabeth Fraser and Kate Bush. The album also featured the Nice on the track "Hell's Angels"; its ethereal sound achieved by a wah-wah pedal attached to Harper's acoustic guitar.

Flat Baroque and Berserk, Harper’s fourth album, is very much a culmination of the acoustic singer-songwriter folk sound of his first three albums. Previous album Folkejokeopus may have hinted at a more progressive direction with a few short experimental pieces, but it’s most ambitious piece was the sprawling Desolation Row-esque Mcgoohan’s Blues, which was more adventurous lyrically than it was musically.
Flat Baroque and Berserk was the first of Harper's recordings to enter the charts, reaching number 20 in the UK album chart in January 1970. was the first of eight albums recorded for EMI's Harvest label. Harper has said of the album, "for the first time in my recording career, proper care and attention was paid to the presentation of the song. The album contains some of Harper's best-known songs. I Hate the White Man", in particular, is noted for its uncompromising lyrics,.
As a result, Flat Baroque and Berserk is his strongest album since his debut, Sophisticated Beggar, and the first in a long line of mind-blowing classics that spanned the 1970's. The album opens with "Don't You Grieve," a new spin on the Jesus/Judas story, told from Judas' point of view. Right away, it's obvious that Roy hasn't lost his trademark sense of humor, but where his irreverence tended to detract on earlier albums, the irony and cleverness here ties in with songs that have serious meaning-digging at religion. Overall, Flat Baroque and Berserk is one of Roy's first records that really works from start to finish (with the exception of Sophisticated Beggar), and it remains today as glittering as the day it was released. Science Friction's remaster sounds flawless. 1970 found Roy Harper producing his fourth full-length LP, Flat Baroque and Berserk.
